Tips To Make Your House Baby Safe

One of the most important things you can do as a parent is to keep your child safe. If you have a new baby or young children at home, you will want to be sure you make your home safe with proper childproofing. If you’ve never done this before, you might feel a bit overwhelmed with the many dangerous things in your home. It can seem difficult to protect your child from everything.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you can’t protect them from everything 100% of the time. This is why you should never leave a young child unsupervised. However, it is possible to take as many precautions as you can to keep your house safe and non baby products out of reach because as you also know, you can’t keep your eye on them every second of every day. Accidents do happen; you can try to reduce the frequency and severity of them.

Here is a safety checklist for making your house safe:

Protect entrances and exits

  • Make sure door locks are working properly
  • Be sure windows are properly secured
  • Make sure upstairs windows have proper locks and child safety devices
  • Be sure children cannot get out front doors to streets and other dangers without supervision
  • Protect doors and entrances to pools and other backyard areas
  • Lock sheds, garages and other areas with tools and things dangerous to children

Remember basic safety

  • Cover stairs that your child can fall down
  • Use doorknob covers on rooms you don’t want your child to get it
  • Be sure you have safety devices in place if you have a pool or backyard pond
  • Keep chemicals and poisons locked up or high where children can’t reach
  • Set your water heater thermostat to or below 120 degrees to prevent burns
  • Unplug curling irons, hair dryers and other appliances after use
  • Cover electrical outlets with protectors

Use safety in your bathroom

  • Keep toilet lids down or locked from babies that may play in them
  • Don’t place chemicals and cleaners under the sink without proper locks on the cabinets
  • Install anti-scalding devices on the sinks and showerheads

Use safety with plants around the home

  • Many plants are poisonous to humans
  • Know the plants you have and if they carry risk of poison to your child
  • Keep plants where your child can’t reach them to dig in them or eat them

Make your kitchen safe

  • Include latches on the drawers and cabinets
  • Cook on the back burners when you can
  • Always turn pot and pan handles in so they don’t hang off the stove
  • Try to keep children out of the kitchen while cooking (use baby gates if you need to)

Now that you have these tips you can make your house safe for your little one. When you take the proper steps to childproof your home, you can reduce the risk of dangers. Statistics have shown that a majority of deaths in children and infants happen due to accidents in the home.
